MOORTIDEVI AWARD INFORMATION AND WINNERS LIST

The Moortidevi Award is an annual literary award in India presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith organization for a work which emphasizes Indian philosophy and culture. The prize includes an amount of Rupees two Lakh, a plaque, a statue of Saraswati, and a shawl.

Recipients

  1. 1983 C.K.Nagaraja Rao: (Kannada: ಸಿ ಕೆ ನಾಗರಾಜ ರಾವ್, June 12, 1915-April 10, 1998) was a Kannada writer, dramatist, stage artist, director, journalist and social activist.
  2. 1984 Virendra Kumar Jain (Hindi: वीरेंद्र कुमार सखलेचा) (4 March 1930-1999) was an Indian politician and the chief minister of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh from 18 January 1978 to 19 January 1980.
  3. 1985 Manu Bhai Pancholi ‘Darshak': Gujarati literature
  4. 1986 Kanhyaiya Lal Sethia: was a well known Rajasthani and Hindi poet. He was born in Sujangarh, Churu District in the Indian state of Rajasthan. 
  5. 1988 Vishnu Prabhakar: (June 21, 1912 – April 11, 2009) was a Hindi writer. He had several short stories, novels, plays and travelogues to his credit. Prabhakar's works have elements of patriotism, nationalism and messages of social upliftment. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1993, Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan Award in 1995 and the Padma Bhushan (the third highest civilian honor of India) by theGovernment of India in 2004
  6. 1989 Vidya Niwas Mishra(1926–2005) was a scholar, a noted Hindi-Sanskrit littérateur, and a journalist. Born at Pakardiha in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh in January, 1926.
  7. 1990 Munishree Nagraj: 
  8. 1991 Pratibha Ray: is an Indian academic and writer. She was born on 21 January 1943, at Alabol, a remote village in the Balikuda area of Jagatsinghpur district formerly part of Cuttack district of Orissa state.She was the first woman to win the Moortidevi Award.
  9. 1992 Acharya Kuber Nath Rai: (March 26, 1933-June 5, 1996) was a writer and scholar of Hindi Literature and Sanskrit. He was born in Matsa village, Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.

  11. 1994 Shivaji Sawant:  (August 31, 1940 – September 18, 2002) was an acclaimed India writer in Marathi. He was born in a small farmer family of Aajra village in Kolhapur district in Maharashtra.

  13. 2000 Govind Chandra Pande: (Hindi: गोविन्द चन्द्र पाण्डे) (1923–2011) was a well-known Indian historian of the Vedic and the Buddhist periods. He served a professor of ancient history and vice-chancellor at Jaipur and Allahabad universities. He was also the chairman of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Simla for several years, the Chairman of Allahabad Museum Society and the Chairman of Central Tibetan Society, Sarnath Varanasi.

  20. 2007 M. Veerappa Moily: (born 12 January 1940) is an Indian politician from the state of Karnataka, and the current Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. He was the former Minister of Corporate Affairs and Minister of Power in the Indian government. Moily was elected as MP of the Chickballapur district Karnataka, Moily was the former Chief Minister (and the first ethnic Tuluva CM) of the Indian state ofKarnataka (19 Nov 1992 - 11 Dec 1994). He was elected to Karnataka state legislative assembly from Karkala constituency of Udupi district.

He was born in 1926 at Kumaranallur in Palakkad (Palghat) district of the southern Indian state of Kerala and lives there. He is a well known Malayalam language poet, essayist, editor and a highly decorated literary personality among contemporary Malayalam writers. Fondly known as Akkittam, his literary works began to gain wide attention in the early 1950s.

  26. 2013 Haraprasad Dasborn 1945, is an Oriya language poet. He is a well known oriya language poet, essayist and columnist. Das, has twelve works of poetry, four of prose, three translations and one piece of fiction to his credit.
